Where to stay on a city break holiday to Prague
Hotel grades are now similar to western Europe but there is still a shortage of hotel rooms, the result of a massive upsurge in visitor numbers in the past two decades.
Prague's city planners have worked hard to keep the character of the city reasonably intact and have avoided overwhelming the city centre with modern international hotels.
Three floating hotels are now moored on the river and it's hard to get more central than this.
New hotels are opening all the time and most of the Soviet-era rooms are being renovated.
As well as hotels, do check out the hostels which are particularly popular with younger customers.
Prague hotel owners grade their own accommodation so be aware that a 3* hotel might not meet expectations. This is not always bad. It can be cheaper at a 4* hotel than a 3* or even 2*.
As a general rule, hotels get cheaper away from the city centre but, as Prague is relatively compact, being on the edge isn't too much of a problem as long as it's near public transport.
Travellers arriving by coach or train may well be met at the station with offers of private accommodation. Some can be good value and it's a pleasant way to meet real Czech people. Take care you don't end up far out of town and try to check prices.
Where you stay in Prague will be dictated, in part, by budget. Most of the 5* hotels are central, as you might expect. The small but luxurious Hotel Hoffmeister, for example, is almost in the shadow of the Castle.
The U Zlatne studne is also near to the Castle at the Ledebour Gardens while the Hotel Pod vezi is at the Mala Strana end of the Charles Bridge. All offer great style as well as an ideal location.
Other top hotels include the Intercontinental, Marriott and Four Seasons amongst the international brands. Many hotels will arrange a pick-up and return mini-bus or courtesy car for airport transfers.
Amongst tourist class hotels, many are in Nove Mesto, the New Town, clustered around the main road southwards. There's easy access by tram from this area at I.P.Pavlova - 10 minutes to the city centre and within walking distance to Vysehrad or the National Museum and Wenceslas Square.
Another popular tourist hotel area in Nove Mesto is to the east of the city centre with tram connections from Nam Republiky. Cheaper hotels are available further out from the city centre but check the accommodation is near to a Metro station or convenient bus route. Apartments are Ideal for a longer stay in the city with the added advantage of kitchen facilities. Apostolic, for example, has apartments facing the Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Square - it's hard to find a better spot to stay. Vlassky Pensions also has a range of centrally located apartments.
